PD/PSE - Protodemos Population Segmentation Engine

The Protodemos Population Segmentation Engine (PSE) is a tool that allows rapid prototyping of sets and sub-sets of a population "Universe."

Originally conceived as a technology platform for health care clinical decision support and quality of care measures, the PD/PSE has expanded its focus.  Now, any industry can benefit from the PD/PSE's ability to rapidly query and consolidate large member bases, make decisions about member inclusion in sets and sub-sets, and use set algebraic operations to provide data sets and answer business questions not possible within a typical SQL or NOSQL database.

Because the PD/PSE's user interface requires no coding from the analyst user, populations can be "sliced and diced" with amazing ease.  A typical application based on a quality of care measure for Asthma medication usage that previously would have taken months to write as traditional programming language and database code was able to be prototyped in less than a single afternoon!

The PD/PSE can also track inclusion/exclusion from a population over time, allowing applications such as entry and fallback of treatment programs and "revolving door" care.  Other features such as the ability to turn population segment criteria (and entire population segments) "ON" and "OFF" in a segmentation project, change control, shared data sets and population segment projects, and others make the PD/PSE a powerful tool for the enterprise.

The PD/PSE can provide powerful functionality any industry that requires rapid prototyping, manipulation, and use of population segments.

  • Health Care - quality of care measures, patient registries, patient action lists, research study cohorts
  • Direct marketing - demographic, consumer and behavioral criteria, geographic and event-based applications
  • Government/Municipal - regulatory applications, census-based applications, revenue
  • Insurance - actuarial and risk handling

Other industries can also benefit even if the "population universe" is not comprised of human beings.  As long as there is a single "member" entity, the principles used by the PD/PSE can apply.  For example, manufacturing warranty claims could consider their population universe to be "the set of all items under warranty" and use the tool in a similar manner.
